Well supported by the Vatican who's main interest was to maintain and restore mosaics of Christian heritage, micro mosaic artists developed their workshops in various areas throughout the country. Many mosaic makers traveled between the Italian art cities, Rome, Florence and Venice to produce micro mosaics for visitors who first admired the traces of Roman splendor and wanted to take home a miniature of the ruins including those of Herculaneum and Pompeii which were faithfully reproduced...
The early nineteenth century brought new tendencies in thinking and in art such as Romanticism and Naturalism, tendencies that found close reflection in those micro mosaics, floral and animal subjects soon became the dominant themes.
